HVAC in Palo Alto works a little differently

Palo Alto homes span more than a century of building styles, from Professorville’s shingle houses to Old Palo Alto’s 1920s classics and the Eichler tracts of the south side. Many were built long before central air existed, and heating and cooling were added later, often in tight attics and crawlspaces. That history shapes almost every service call we make.

The city itself is different too. Palo Alto runs its own utility, City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU), which offers rebates when you replace gas heating with a heat pump. The City also offers an instant permit for qualifying residential heat pumps, with clear rules on noise and placement. And with a mild climate, many systems sit idle for months, then fail on the first hot afternoon of the year.

What we do

Your HVAC contractor in Palo Alto and across the Peninsula

ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto is a local HVAC company handling everything from a single HVAC repair to a complete HVAC installation. We repair and replace air conditioning systems, gas furnaces and heat pumps, install and program smart thermostats, design zoning for homes with hot and cold floors, and improve energy efficiency with correctly sized equipment, sealed ducts and high SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings. When something fails on a hot afternoon or a cold morning, our urgent HVAC service page explains what to check first and how to reach us.

Our home base is Palo Alto, and we also serve Menlo Park, Atherton, East Palo Alto, Stanford, Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, across the Peninsula and Santa Clara County. Silicon Valley homes range from 1900s shingle houses to brand-new builds, and the Bay Area’s mild climate, wildfire smoke seasons and growing heat waves all shape what a good heating and cooling system needs to do here. We explain manufacturer warranties on new equipment and keep written records of every visit, so you always know the condition of your system.

How we’re different

We start with what you’re noticing, room by room, then measure before we recommend anything. Repair prices come first. Replacement options only come up when they make sense, with the rebate math laid out. And we respect the house: drop cloths, protected finishes, and careful routing in historic and mid-century homes.

Questions about
HVAC in Palo Alto?

Simple answers to help you find the next step.

What HVAC services does ComfortFlow offer in Palo Alto?

AC repair and installation, heat pump installation, ductless mini-splits, furnace and heating repair, Eichler radiant heating, ductwork and airflow fixes, indoor air quality upgrades and seasonal maintenance, for homes across Palo Alto. As a full-service HVAC contractor, ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto handles both repair calls and complete system replacements, including thermostat upgrades, duct sealing and filtration. Most of our work is residential: single-family homes, Eichlers, ADUs and townhomes across Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Los Altos and the rest of the Peninsula. If you are not sure which service fits, describe what you are noticing and we will point you to the right starting place.

Where are you located?

Our shop is at 438 Cambridge Ave, Palo Alto, CA 94306, near California Avenue. That puts most Palo Alto neighborhoods within a few minutes’ drive. Being local matters for HVAC work. Shorter drive times mean quicker visits, and our technicians already know the local housing stock, from Professorville shingle houses to south Palo Alto Eichlers. We serve every Palo Alto ZIP code (94301, 94303, 94304 and 94306) plus nearby Peninsula cities. Call 650-460-3483 or use the request form to book a visit.

How much is the Palo Alto heat pump rebate?

As published on the City of Palo Alto Rebate Hub, City of Palo Alto Utilities offers a $2,500 Heat Pump HVAC rebate, or $5,000 for income-eligible residents, when a heat pump replaces a gas or fossil fuel heater. Add-on rebates cover qualifying panel and wiring work. See our rebate guide. Rebates can make a heat pump cost far less than many homeowners expect, especially when an aging gas furnace and air conditioner are replaced together. ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto confirms current CPAU amounts before you sign, builds the expected rebate into your written estimate, and prepares the paperwork so the application goes in within the 90-day window after final inspection.

Do I need a permit to replace HVAC equipment in Palo Alto?

Yes. Qualifying heat pump projects at single-family homes, duplexes and ADUs can use the City’s instant permit, which a C-20 licensed contractor files. We handle permits for the work we do. More in our instant permit guide. Permits protect you: they make sure the system is sized and installed safely, and a final inspection is required for CPAU rebates. For heat pump installs that qualify, the instant permit means no waiting on plan review. Projects that fall outside the criteria use the City’s standard process, which takes longer, and we tell you up front which path your project needs.

Why do some rooms feel warmer than others?

Sun exposure, closed vents, insulation, ductwork and system performance all play a part. Note which rooms change and when; that helps us narrow down what to check. Most uneven-room problems are airflow problems. In Palo Alto, west-facing rooms, second floors and additions are the usual trouble spots, and Eichlers with big glass walls heat up fast on summer afternoons. A good HVAC company measures airflow at each register instead of guessing. The fix might be duct sealing, a new return, balancing dampers, a zoned system or a ductless head for one stubborn room.

Would a heat pump work for my Palo Alto home?

For most homes, yes. Palo Alto’s mild winters suit heat pumps very well. The right fit depends on your ducts, electrical panel, layout and where the outdoor unit can go under the City’s placement rules. Overnight winter lows here rarely stay far below 40°F for long, well within the range where modern variable-speed heat pumps run efficiently. A heat pump also replaces your air conditioner, so you get both heating and cooling from one system. ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto starts with a load calculation and a look at your ducts and electrical panel before recommending equipment.

Can you work on Eichler radiant heating?

Yes. We service radiant boilers and pumps, diagnose slab leaks, and add ductless cooling to Eichlers in Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow and across south Palo Alto. See Eichler radiant heating. Eichler radiant systems use a boiler or water heater and pipes in the concrete slab, which is very different from a forced-air furnace. We pressure test loops, service circulator pumps and controls, and help you decide between repair, an air-to-water heat pump or a switch to ductless. Many owners keep the radiant floors and simply add ductless cooling.

Do you serve cities outside Palo Alto?

Yes: Menlo Park, Atherton, East Palo Alto, Stanford, Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. See service areas. Each city has its own utility, permit office and incentive programs, so our service area pages explain what is different in each one. Palo Alto homes are City of Palo Alto Utilities customers; Menlo Park, Atherton and East Palo Alto use PG&E with Peninsula Clean Energy; Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills use PG&E with Silicon Valley Clean Energy.
