AC repair in Palo Alto starts with a full diagnosis: refrigerant pressures, electrical components, airflow and the condensate drain. Most no-cool calls trace back to a failed capacitor, a clogged filter or coil, a refrigerant leak, or a drain safety switch. ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto explains the fix and the cost before any work begins. Call 650-460-3483.

Why Palo Alto air conditioners fail when you need them most

Palo Alto’s climate is gentle most of the year, which means many systems sit idle from October through May. When the first warm spell arrives, components that have been resting for months are asked to run for hours. That is when weak capacitors give out, contactors stick, and drain lines clogged with a season of dust and algae trip the float switch.

Older homes add their own wrinkles. In Old Palo Alto and Crescent Park, air handlers often live in tight attics or crawlspaces where heat builds up and ducts were added decades after the house was built. In the Eichler tracts, cooling is frequently a later retrofit, so we see mini-splits and rooftop-adjacent line sets that need careful attention.

What we check on every AC repair visit

A good repair is a diagnosis first. We don’t swap parts until we know why the system stopped working.

  • Thermostat settings, wiring and power at the air handler and outdoor unit
  • Capacitor, contactor and fan motor condition with meter readings, not guesses
  • Refrigerant pressures and temperature split across the indoor coil
  • Indoor coil and outdoor coil cleanliness, plus filter condition
  • Condensate drain, trap and safety float switch
  • Ductwork at the plenum for disconnected or crushed sections
  • Breaker, disconnect and line voltage under load

Common AC problems we fix in Palo Alto homes

The system runs but the air isn’t cold

Usually low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty coil, or an outdoor fan that has stopped turning. Topping off refrigerant without finding the leak only buys a few weeks, so we locate the leak and tell you whether it is worth repairing.

The outdoor unit hums but won’t start

A failed start or run capacitor is the most common cause and one of the least expensive repairs. A stuck contactor or seized fan motor are the next suspects.

Water around the indoor unit

A clogged condensate line or a cracked drain pan. Left alone, it can damage drywall and flooring, so this one is worth calling about quickly.

Short cycling or a breaker that trips

Electrical faults, an oversized system, or a compressor working against high head pressure. We measure amperage draw to find the real cause.

Repair or replace?

We give you both options when replacement is on the table, with honest reasoning. A 15-year-old system with a major refrigerant leak on an older refrigerant is often a better candidate for a heat pump upgrade, especially since City of Palo Alto Utilities offers a heat pump rebate when you replace a gas heater. A 6-year-old system with a failed capacitor is a repair, every time. Our guide on repairing versus replacing an AC in Palo Alto walks through the math.

Answers from the ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto team about ac repair in Palo Alto homes.

How fast can you get to my home in Palo Alto?

We are based at 438 Cambridge Ave, near California Avenue, so most Palo Alto addresses are a short drive. Call 650-460-3483 and we’ll give you the next available window. During the first heat wave of the year, demand across the Bay Area spikes, so calling early in the day helps. When you call, tell us whether the system runs at all, whether you see ice or water, and who is at home. That lets ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto prioritize households with health concerns and arrive with the most likely parts on the truck.

Do you repair heat pumps and ductless systems too?

Yes. A heat pump in cooling mode is an air conditioner, so the diagnosis is very similar. We also service wall-mounted and ceiling-cassette ductless mini-splits. Many Palo Alto homes now have heat pumps, often installed with CPAU rebates, and their cooling problems look like any AC problem: warm air, short cycling or ice. We check refrigerant pressures, the reversing valve, sensors and inverter boards, and on mini-splits we also clean the blower wheel and coil, which is a common cause of weak airflow.

Is it worth recharging refrigerant?

Only after the leak is found. Refrigerant doesn’t get used up, so a low charge always means a leak. We locate it and tell you whether repair or replacement makes more sense. Repeated recharges without a leak repair waste money and release refrigerant into the air. We use electronic leak detection and, when needed, nitrogen pressure testing to find the leak. A leak at an accessible valve or fitting is usually worth fixing. A leak inside an older indoor or outdoor coil often makes replacement, ideally with a heat pump, the better long-term value.

Why does my AC freeze up?

Ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines usually means restricted airflow (a dirty filter or coil, closed vents, a weak blower) or low refrigerant. Turn the system off, let it thaw, and call us. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor, so switch it to off, set the fan to on, and let the ice melt for a few hours. Check that the filter is clean and every vent is open. If it freezes again after restarting, the cause is usually low refrigerant or a failing blower motor, and that needs a technician.

Can you work on older systems in historic homes?

Yes. Many Palo Alto homes have equipment in tight attics and crawlspaces. We plan access carefully and protect finished floors and trim. Older Palo Alto homes often have equipment in places that were never designed for it: low crawlspaces, attics with little headroom, or closets added during remodels. ComfortFlow HVAC Palo Alto technicians bring drop cloths and floor protection, take care around plaster, trim and original floors, and explain any access issues before work starts.
